Presentation at From Abortion Rights to Social Justice: Building the Movement for Reproductive Freedom, Amherst, MA
How did we get to the point we find ourselves - gathered here together, people deeply committed to social, racial, reproductive and environmental justice, people who give so much of ourselves to working toward making the world a better place, and yet worrying about how to "reclaim morality" from the right?
The answer is multifaceted, and the suggestions I make this morning are not meant to be complete answers. But I hope they'll help as we set out to do what I think is some of the most important work ahead of us: thinking through our own moral values and vision, building what will sometimes be difficult-to-achieve agreements about them among ourselves, and then communicating them in clear and explicit ways to others.
Part of the answer to the questions, "how did we get to this point?" and "how do we beginning reclaiming morality?" lies in what the right has done over the past couple decades. I'm not going to say much about that...
