U.S. lawmakers debated the fallout from Hwang Woo suk's fraudulent stem cell research on Tuesday afternoon, while Korean prosecutors fruitlessly pondered alternative ways of contacting Dr. Gerald Schatten.
Schatten, Hwang's former stem cell research collaborator, was not called as a witness to the hearing, contrary to the Korean prosecutors' expectations. The prosecution said on Monday that it sent an investigator, prosecutor Park Eun seok, to the United States to make personal contact with Schatten. The outcome of his efforts is not yet known.

"We haven't yet received contact from the investigator, nor have we been able to reach Dr. Schatten," said prosecutor Lee In gyu yesterday morning after the hearing finished.

To the question of whether the prosecution will be able to wrap up the probe without testimony from Schatten, prosecutor Lee said, after a long pause, "If he doesn't reply, there will be some insufficiencies in the probe, but I guess we will still have to wrap up the probe as it is."
