Mientras escribo este artículo, delegados de todo el
mundo se reúnen en la sede de Naciones Unidas para tomar
medidas conducentes a la creación de una convención
internacional que prohíba la clonación humana
reproductiva. La clonación es la tecnología de
manipulación genética y reproductiva de seres
humanos más reciente y llamativa, que ha despertado una
gran polémica y mantiene a la sociedad dividida. Además,
durante varios años, periódicos universitarios
han publicado casos de pagos de ingentes sumas a "donantes"
de óvulos con características concretas (véase
"Tecnologías de reproducción asistida"
en el número de julio/agosto de 2002 de Z Magazine).
Recientemente se ha hablado del diagnóstico genético
previo a la implantación, que consiste en el análisis
de los embriones para averiguar si poseen ciertas características
genéticas antes de implantarse mediante la técnica
de fecundación in vitro, con vistas a seleccionar el
sexo o descartar enfermedades hereditarias. La ingeniería
genética para rasgos hereditarios, la tecnología
susceptible de causar el mayor impacto social y biológico
hasta el momento, pronto suscitará un debate público.
