Confronting Eugenics

Overview | Members | Activities

Eugenics is making a comeback. Pernicious and unfounded claims about biologically based hierarchies of human worth are more widespread now than at any time since the heyday of the eugenics movement a hundred years ago. To counter this resurgence, the Center for Genetics and Society, in collaboration with the Othering and Belonging Institute, has launched Confronting Eugenics to Build a Just Future. This three-year initiative, funded by the Mellon Foundation, examines the legacies and contemporary warning signs of eugenic beliefs and policies.

Confronting Eugenics has gathered a diverse group of publicly engaged scholars across disciplines and issue advocates across sectors to reflect on the manifestations and implications of eugenics in U.S. science, medicine, and technology. Through a series of workshops, participants are:

  • Building relationships with others working to challenge eugenics
  • Identifying eugenic narratives and impulses in US science, technology, medicine, and public health,
  • Exploring opportunities for anti-eugenic interventions in education and other arenas
  • Collaborating to develop public events and resources for instructors, advocates, and broader publics
