A coalition of pro-choice groups and a former chief medical officer of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are calling for California to establish regulations for the harvesting of women's eggs for stem-cell research.
The Pro-Choice Alliance for Responsible Research, Our Bodies Ourselves, the Center for Genetics and Society, and former FDA Chief Medical Officer Suzanne Parisian will testify at a California Senate-Assembly Committee Hearing on the implementation of Proposition 71 Oversight Committee Wednesday. Proposition 71, approved by voters in November, establishes $3 billion in stem-cell research funding in California.
The pro-choice groups are concerned about an expanding market for women's eggs caused by an expansion of stem-cell research.
The groups said the drugs used to "shut down" women's ovaries and those used to "hyperstimulate" the ovaries to produce multiple eggs are associated with serious adverse reactions that in some cases are life-threatening.
