Attempts to modify genes in somatic cells (cells other than
eggs and sperm) are currently in clinical trials.
Argument for: If perfected, this procedure could
have important medical applications.
Argument against: Unless carefully regulated,
this procedure could be used to try to "enhance" human
beings in ways that would be socially undesirable.
Comment: Somatic gene transfer should be used
for valid medical applications, not for "enhancement."
